About this tool

HEIC to JPG converter for iPhone photos

Add your iPhone photos and ToolHero writes JPGs on your device, upright and with their colours kept. It reads HEIC with a decoder your browser already has: Safari’s own, or in Chrome the device’s video decoder where there is one. If your browser has neither, the photo says so and links to your system’s steps.

Which browsers can open HEIC here

HEIC photos are compressed with HEVC, a licensed video technology. ToolHero doesn’t bundle a decoder for it. It borrows the one your browser or computer already has, and the photos never leave your device.

  • Safari on a Mac, iPhone or iPad opens HEIC by itself.
  • Chrome can’t open HEIC as an image, but ToolHero hands each part of the photo to the computer’s HEVC video decoder. On a Mac with Apple silicon, that converts a 12-megapixel photo.
  • Firefox couldn’t decode HEIC in our tests. Where a browser can’t, the photo shows a short note instead, with your system’s built-in way to get a JPG.

Whole folders of photos, or a browser that can’t open them? The ToolHero desktop app for Mac and Windows is on the way.

Upright the first time

An iPhone stores a portrait photo sideways, plus a note saying how to turn it. ToolHero applies that turn once, so the JPG stands upright and carries no rotation tag that another app could apply a second time.

Big photos are split into tiles inside the file: a 12-megapixel shot holds 48 of them. Safari reassembles them itself. In Chrome, ToolHero decodes the tiles one by one, puts them back together and trims the edges to the photo’s real size.

Colours that match the phone

iPhones capture in Display P3, a wider range of colours than most JPGs use. The JPG keeps the photo’s Display P3 profile, so a red flower stays as red as it looked on the phone instead of turning dull.

The size changes too. HEIC packs a photo better than JPEG at the same quality, but the JPG’s size follows the quality you pick: on our test picture the JPG at quality 75 came out at less than a quarter of the HEIC.

Why convert HEIC to JPG?

  • What you gain

Websites, office software, print shops and older computers that refuse HEIC take JPG without a second thought, so the photo goes wherever you send it.
  • Good to know

ToolHero opens HEIC through your browser’s own decoder, so it works where the browser can decode it. Where it can’t, the photo says so and points you to your system’s built-in way.
  • Measured on our test photo

At the default quality of 75, our 12-megapixel test HEIC of 3,913,430 bytes became an 867,020-byte JPG: 0.22× the size. The test picture is a synthetic iPhone-style scene saved at quality 0.75, so how a real photo compares depends on the quality its HEIC was saved at. Safari and Chrome decode the HEIC slightly differently, and their JPGs came out within 0.2% of each other in size.

How it works

  1. Step 1:Add your HEIC photos

Drop them here, choose them from your device or paste them. Photos straight off an iPhone keep their .heic ending, and that’s fine.

  2. Step 2:Convert to JPG

JPG is picked already, at a quality of 75. Raise it for prints, then press Convert.

  3. Step 3:Download

Save each JPG on its own, or all of them in one .zip.

HEIC vs JPG at a glance

How the two formats compare, so you know what to expect.

  • HEIC

    Your files

The format iPhones and iPads save photos in. It packs a photo into less space than a JPG, but plenty of apps, sites and computers can’t open it.

Best for Keeping photos small on the phone that took them.

  • JPG

    What you get

The classic photo format. Every phone, computer, app and website has opened JPGs for decades.

Best for Photos you want to share anywhere: email, chat, print services and older software.

Questions, answered

Why do my iPhone photos end in .heic?

Since the iPhone 7, the Camera saves photos as HEIC by default because it takes less space than JPEG. In Settings, Camera, Formats, choosing Most Compatible makes new photos JPGs instead.

Why can’t a normal Chrome tab show HEIC photos?

Chrome has no HEIC image decoder. Many devices do give it an HEVC video decoder, though, and ToolHero feeds the photo’s tiles to that one by one. That’s how HEIC converts here in Chrome even though Chrome itself won’t display the file.

Does a HEIC lose detail as a JPG?

A little, since JPG compresses again on top of the HEIC’s own compression. At the default quality of 75 it’s hard to spot; choose 90 or more for prints and close crops.

Can I convert HEIC to JPG on Windows?

Try it: add a photo here. If your browser can decode HEIC, it converts straight away. If not, the photo says so and links to the Windows way, which needs Microsoft’s HEIF and HEVC extensions.

Are my photos sent anywhere?

No. ToolHero reads and converts them inside your browser, on your device, and there’s no account to make.
