About this tool

Repair a damaged PDF

This tool repairs a damaged PDF in your browser. It reads the file from the start, rebuilds the table a PDF uses to find its parts, puts missing pages back in the page list, and saves a clean copy of every page it can read. It tells you how many pages it recovered. Your PDF is never sent anywhere.

What it fixes

A PDF is a set of parts with a table at the end that says where each one is. When a download stops early, an email program trims a file, or a program crashes while saving, that table is missing or wrong, and viewers say the file is damaged or can’t be opened.

Repair ignores the table and finds the parts by reading the file itself. If the list of pages is wrong or gone, it makes a new one from the pages it found, in their order. The result is a complete, clean PDF with the pages that were still there.

What it can’t bring back

Repair recovers what is in the file. A page whose own data was never saved can’t come back, and a picture cut off halfway shows as far as it goes. The result says how many pages it recovered, such as 12 of 14, so you know what is missing.

If no page can be found at all, the file is refused with a plain message rather than saved empty. A file that isn’t a PDF can’t be repaired.

A clean copy, not a change to your file

Your original is never touched. Repair saves a new file named after it, like report-repaired.pdf, and everything else in the PDF that was readable is kept: its text, pictures, bookmarks and links.

Once it opens, you can split it, rotate it or compress it like any other PDF.

How it works

  1. Step 1:Add the damaged PDF

Drop it in or choose it from your device. A file that won’t open elsewhere stays in the list so it can be repaired.

  2. Step 2:Press Repair

The file is read from the start and the pages that can be read are saved into a clean copy.

  3. Step 3:Check the pages, then save

The row says how many pages came back. Save the repaired PDF, or all of them as a .zip.

Questions, answered

Why does my PDF say it is damaged or won’t open?

Usually its table of contents for the file’s parts is missing or wrong, because a download stopped early or a program crashed while saving it. The pages are often still inside, and Repair finds them.

Can I repair a PDF that was cut off partway?

Yes. The pages saved before the cut usually come back, and the result tells you how many. Pages after the cut were never in the file, so they can’t be recovered.

Will repairing change my original file?

No. The repaired PDF is a new file named after your original, like invoice-repaired.pdf. Your damaged file stays exactly as it was.

What if Repair finds no pages?

Then it says so and saves nothing. The file may be too badly damaged, or it may not be a PDF at all.

Can it repair a PDF with a password?

Yes, if you have the password. The PDF asks for it on its file in the list, and the repaired copy has no password: the row says “Saved without its password”. One whose owner doesn’t allow changes can’t be repaired until Unlock PDF takes that off.

Is my damaged PDF sent anywhere to be repaired?

No. The file is read and rewritten by engines running in your browser, so it never leaves your device and there’s nothing to sign in to.

What it does

It reads the file again from the start and rebuilds the table a PDF uses to find its parts. Pages missing from the page list are put back, and the pages that can be read are saved in a clean copy.

A file cut short or with a broken table usually comes back whole or nearly. A page whose own data is lost comes back damaged, or not at all, and the result says how many pages it recovered. A PDF protected with a password asks for it first, and the repaired copy has none.
