About this tool

Split a PDF into separate files

This tool splits a PDF into smaller PDFs right in your browser. Save every page as its own file, or type ranges such as 1-3, 4-6 and get one PDF for each range. Pages are copied as they are, so text stays selectable and nothing is redrawn. Your PDF is never sent anywhere.

Every page, or the ranges you choose

Every page is the default: a 12-page PDF becomes 12 PDFs, named after it and numbered, like report-page-01.pdf, so they sort in page order wherever you save them.

Choose Custom ranges to decide how the pages are grouped. Type page numbers and ranges such as 1-3, 4-6, 9, or pick pages on the preview: each page you pick joins the range next to it or starts a new one, and Shift-click picks a whole run as one range. Each range becomes one PDF, like report-pages-01-03.pdf, and pages that are in no range are left out.

One set of ranges works for every PDF in the list. A shorter PDF gives the pages it has, and one with none of them says so instead of saving an empty file.

Pages are copied, not redrawn

Splitting moves pages into new files without touching what is on them. Text stays text you can select and search, drawings stay sharp at any zoom, photos keep their original quality, and links still open.

Each file holds only its own pages, so its size follows what is on them. Photos and anything else already compressed are copied byte for byte, and page content a PDF stores uncompressed is compressed as the new file is written. Our two-page test PDF stores its pages uncompressed and is 55.5 KB; split into single pages, it gave 1.2 KB for its 80 lines of text and 6.4 KB for its 1,200 coloured squares and 120 curves.

Each new PDF also keeps the original’s title, author and dates, so it still says what it is in a file browser or a document library.

Tested with PDFium via @embedpdf/pdfium 2.15.1 on a Mac18,5 (Apple M6) on macOS 27.0.1, 2026-10-16. The output was byte-identical in Chromium, Firefox and WebKit.

What a new PDF doesn’t take along

Bookmarks, fillable form fields and accessibility tags belong to the whole document, so they stay with the original. A form’s filled-in answers still show on the pages, but the fields can no longer be filled in.

If you need the whole document with its bookmarks and fields, keep the original alongside the parts. To turn pages the right way up first, rotate the PDF and save the turned copy, then add that copy here and split it.

A PDF protected with a password can’t be opened here yet, and one whose owner doesn’t allow changing its pages says so; the others split as usual.

How it works

  1. Step 1:Add your PDFs

Drop them in or choose them from your device. The first one shows its pages, and each says how many files it will make.

  2. Step 2:Choose how to split

Keep Every page, or switch to Custom ranges and type ranges like 1-3, 4-6 or pick pages on the preview.

  3. Step 3:Press Split, then save

The new PDFs are made one at a time. Save a single file, or all of them as a .zip.

Questions, answered

How do I split a PDF into separate pages?

Add the PDF and press Split: Every page is already chosen, so each page becomes its own PDF. Download saves them together as a .zip, numbered in page order.

Can I take just one page out of a PDF?

Yes. Choose Custom ranges and type the page’s number, or pick it on the preview. You get one PDF holding that page, named like invoice-page-03.pdf, and the original stays as it was.

Does my PDF leave my device when I split it?

No. The PDF is opened by an engine running in your browser, and the new files are made on your device. Nothing is sent to ToolHero or anyone else, and there is nothing to sign in to.

Will the split files lose quality?

No. The pages are copied into the new files as they are, not redrawn or turned into pictures, so text, drawings and photos look exactly as they did.

Can I split several PDFs at once?

Yes. Add them all and press Split: with nothing selected, every PDF is split with the same settings, one after another. Select some first to split only those. All the new files download together in one .zip.

How large a PDF can I split here?

There’s no page limit and no daily quota. Everything happens on your device, so the largest PDF you can split depends on its memory: a computer handles bigger files than a phone.
