Redact a PDF so nothing can be uncovered
This tool redacts a PDF in your browser. Draw boxes over what to hide, or search for a name or number to catch every match, and it removes the text, picture pixels and drawings underneath for good before covering them. Nothing can be copied out or uncovered later, and the file never leaves your device.
Removed, not just covered
A black rectangle drawn in a PDF editor only covers text: anyone can copy it out, search for it, or move the rectangle away. Redacting here removes what’s underneath first. Text under a box is deleted from the file, the pixels of a photo or scan under it are cleared, and a drawing that runs under it becomes a picture without the covered part.
Only what’s under the boxes goes. The rest of a line stays text you can select and search, and pictures beside a box keep every pixel.
Scanned documents work too: the scan’s pixels under each box are cleared, and its invisible text layer, which lets you search a scan, loses those words as well.
Find every match, on every page
Type a name, an account number or any word and add it as a search: every place it appears, on every page, is marked before anything is removed, and you can see each one on the page. Add as many searches as you need.
Choose Whole words only so a search for “Ann” leaves “Annual” alone, and Match case to tell “May” from “may”. Areas you draw and searches work together in one go, and several PDFs can be redacted at once.
How it works
-
Step 1:Add your PDFs
Drop them in or choose them from your device. The first one opens on its first page.
-
Step 2:Mark what to remove
Drag boxes over areas, or search for words and numbers to find every match.
-
Step 3:Press Redact, then save
You get a redacted copy of each PDF. Check it, then save one file or all of them as a .zip.
Questions, answered
Can redacted text be recovered from the PDF?
No. The text under each box is deleted from the file before the box is drawn, so it can’t be copied, searched or uncovered by moving the box.
How do I redact every instance of a name in a PDF?
Type the name under Find text and press Add. Every match on every page is marked on the preview, and all of them are removed when you press Redact.
Can I redact a scanned PDF?
Yes. Draw boxes over what to hide: the scan’s pixels under them are cleared, and any searchable text layer loses those words too.
Does redacting remove the PDF’s metadata?
Attachments, scripts, XMP metadata and bookmarks never carry over to the redacted copy, and with Remove document details on, the title and author go too.
Can I choose the colour of the redaction boxes?
Yes: black, gray or white. Whatever the colour, what was under the box is gone.
Is my PDF sent anywhere when I redact it?
No. Redaction runs in your browser, so the document never leaves your device, which matters most for the files people redact.

Hidden data
The title, author and other details go too. Attachments, scripts, metadata, bookmarks, links, form fields and hidden layers never carry over to a redacted copy.
Redacting removes what’s under each box for good: text, pictures and drawings. The copy is a new PDF made from what the pages show.
