About this tool

Add page numbers to a PDF and save it

This tool adds page numbers to a PDF in your browser and saves a copy. Choose the format (1, Page 1, 1 of N or Page 1 of N), where the number sits, the first number, and which pages get one. The preview shows every number on its page before you save. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Choose how the numbers look and where they go

Pick a format: just the number, “Page 3”, “3 of 12” or “Page 3 of 12”. Where the format says “of”, the last number is the one the last numbered page shows, so a PDF that starts at 1 ends with its page count.

Six places are on offer, left, centre or right at the top or the bottom of the page. For a PDF you will print on both sides, turn on Facing pages: even pages swap sides, so the numbers sit at the outer edge of every spread.

Set the size in points, the distance from the page’s edge, a font (sans, serif or mono, regular or bold) and a colour. The preview moves as you change them, and nothing is saved until you press Number.

Skip the cover, start at any number, number a range

The first number is 1 unless you set another. To leave a cover or a title page bare, skip the first page or two: the first numbered page shows the first number, so the cover doesn’t use one up.

To number only some pages, type them in the Pages field, such as 3-10, 12. Pages the PDF doesn’t have are left out, so one setting works for several PDFs of different lengths.

Several PDFs can be numbered at once: each one’s numbers start again from the first number. Each PDF saves as a copy named after it, like report-numbered.pdf.

The rest of your PDF stays as it is

Each number is real text added to the page, so it can be selected and searched. Everything already on the page stays: text, photos, drawings, links and fillable form fields, and the PDF’s bookmarks and title.

Rotated pages and pages with a crop box get their number at the edge you see, not at the edge of the stored page. A digital signature no longer checks out afterwards, as after any change to a signed file.

A PDF protected with a password asks for it on the file before it opens, and the numbered copy has no password. One whose owner doesn’t allow changes says so: Unlock PDF takes that off first, and the others are numbered as usual.

How it works

  1. Step 1:Add your PDFs

Drop them in or choose them from your device. The first one shows its pages.

  2. Step 2:Set the numbers

Pick the format, the place, the first number and which pages. The preview shows each number on its page.

  3. Step 3:Press Number, then save

You get a copy of each PDF with its pages numbered. Save one file, or all of them as a .zip.

Questions, answered

How do I add page numbers to a PDF?

Add the PDF, pick a format and a place for the number, and press Number. You can check every number on the preview first. The numbered copy saves as a new PDF, and your original is untouched.

How do I start numbering at page 3, or leave the cover out?

Set Skip the first to 1 or 2 to leave a cover or title page bare, or type the pages to number, such as 3-10. The first numbered page shows the first number, which is 1 unless you change it.

Can I number pages as “Page 1 of 10”?

Yes. Choose Page 1 of N. N is the last number given, so a PDF of ten pages that starts at 1 reads Page 1 of 10 through Page 10 of 10.

Can I put page numbers in the centre or a corner?

Yes. Pick one of six places: left, centre or right at the top or the bottom. Facing pages makes even pages swap sides, for PDFs you print on both sides.

Do page numbers land in the right place on rotated pages?

Yes. The number sits at the page’s edge as you see it, also on landscape pages, pages stored on their side and pages cropped to part of their stored size.

Does adding page numbers change the rest of my PDF?

No. Text, photos, drawings, links, form fields and bookmarks stay as they were, and the number is real text you can select and search. Only a digital signature stops checking out, as after any change.

Is my PDF sent anywhere when I number it?

No. The PDF is opened and saved by an engine running in your browser, so it never leaves your device and there’s nothing to sign in to.
