Desktop app

What it adds

  • Opens iPhone photos HEIC photos open with the support built into your computer: macOS has it already, and on Windows it uses Microsoft’s HEIF and HEVC extensions.
  • Whole folders at once Drop in a folder of photos and convert, compress or resize all of them in one go.
  • Private, like the website Your files stay on your computer. Nothing is sent to us, and it works without an internet connection.

What it will do

Everything ToolHero does in your browser today: convert, compress, resize, crop, rotate and flip images, with the same layout and the same encoders. The app adds what a browser can’t do well, like working through folders of thousands of photos and saving the results next to the originals.

It’s built from the same code as this website, so the tools you know here work the same way there.

iPhone photos (HEIC)

Most browsers can’t open HEIC photos, which is why the website can only convert them in Safari. The app asks your computer to open them instead. On a Mac that works out of the box. On Windows, it works once the HEIF Image Extensions and HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store are installed, the same ones Windows itself needs.

Questions, answered

When will the desktop app be ready?

We don’t have a date to share yet. Email us from this page and we’ll tell you as soon as it is.

Will the website stay free?

Yes. The website is free and stays free, with no ads. The app is for bigger jobs, like whole folders of photos.

Will the app open HEIC photos on any Windows PC?

Only on PCs with Microsoft’s HEIF Image Extensions and HEVC Video Extensions installed: the app uses the HEIC support Windows provides, and Windows needs those two extensions for it. If HEIC photos already open in the Photos app, you’re all set.
