GIF to JPG converter for still pictures
ToolHero turns a GIF into a JPG that opens in every photo app and on every site. An animated GIF keeps only its first frame, so you get one still picture. Transparent pixels become white, because JPG has no transparency. It suits photo-like GIFs best; for logos and lettering, PNG stays crisper and is often smaller.
An animated GIF becomes one still frame
A GIF can hold a whole loop of frames. A JPG holds exactly one picture, so ToolHero keeps the first frame of the animation and leaves the rest out.
The Converter flags animated GIFs before you press Convert, so it’s never a surprise. If a later moment is the one you want, take a screenshot while the GIF plays and convert the screenshot instead.
Colours, edges and see-through pixels
GIF stores at most 256 colours per frame. JPG can show millions, but converting can’t invent shades the GIF never had, so banding in skies and skin stays visible.
JPG compression is built for photos. On flat cartoons, charts, pixel art and text it can leave faint smudges around sharp edges, and the file may even grow: our bar chart GIF became a JPG 1.16× its size, while GIF to PNG made it 0.54×.
GIF transparency is all or nothing: each pixel is either fully clear or fully solid. In the JPG, the clear ones are filled with white.
Why convert GIF to JPG?
How it works
-
Step 1:Add your GIFs
Drop them in or choose them from your device. Still and animated GIFs both work, and animated ones are marked.
-
Step 2:Set the quality, then convert
JPG is selected for you. Leave the quality where it is, or raise it for graphics with fine lines, then press Convert.
-
Step 3:Download the JPGs
Save them separately or bundled in a .zip. Each JPG shows the GIF’s first frame.

Questions, answered
Which frame of an animated GIF ends up in the JPG?
The first one. A JPG can’t hold animation, so ToolHero takes frame one and skips the others. For a different moment, screenshot it while the GIF plays and convert that.
Can a JPG keep the animation?
No, the format has room for one picture only. Keep the GIF for the motion and use the JPG as a still preview, a thumbnail or a print.
Why does my GIF still look grainy as a JPG?
The grain comes from GIF’s 256-colour limit and was baked in when the GIF was made. JPG can’t add the missing shades back, though at a normal quality it won’t make the banding worse.
Is GIF to JPG or GIF to PNG better for a logo?
PNG. It keeps edges and flat colours exactly, and transparency too. Our chart GIF grew by 16% as a JPG but shrank by 46% as a PNG. JPG suits photo-like GIFs, where it usually makes the smaller file.
Where does the transparent background go?
It turns white. JPG has no transparency at all, so every clear pixel in the GIF is filled with white in the JPG.
Does converting a GIF send it anywhere?
No. Your browser decodes the GIF and ToolHero writes the JPG on your device, so the file never leaves it.
