About this tool

Shrink JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF files without visible quality loss.

How it works

  1. Step 1:Add your images

Drop them in, choose them from your device or paste from the clipboard. Add as many as you like.

  2. Step 2:Pick a quality or a size

Keep the format or switch to a smaller one, then set a quality or the size you need. Press Compress and every image shrinks on your device.

  3. Step 3:Download

Save images one by one, or all at once as a .zip. Your files stay in the workspace, so you can convert, resize or crop them next.

Which format should I use?

Compressing keeps each image’s format unless you pick another. Switching format is often the biggest win.

  • JPG

The classic photo format. Every phone, computer, app and website has opened JPGs for decades.

Best for Photos you want to share anywhere: email, chat, print services and older software.

A lossless format that keeps every pixel exactly. Great for screenshots, logos and anything with text or sharp edges.

Best for Screenshots, logos, diagrams, cut-outs with transparency, and master copies you will edit again.

A modern web format that makes both photos and graphics smaller than JPG or PNG, with transparency.

Best for Websites, apps and online shops: images that should look good and load fast.

Questions, answered

Do my images leave my device?

No. ToolHero processes your images right in your browser, on your own device. They’re never sent to a server, so they stay private, and big batches don’t wait on your internet connection.

How much smaller will my images get?

It depends on the image. Photos straight from a phone or camera often shrink by 60–80% at the default quality with no visible difference. Images that were already compressed shrink less.

If we can’t make an image smaller without changing its format or size, we keep the original so you never end up with a bigger file.

What does the quality setting do?

Lower quality gives smaller files with more visible compression. The default of 75% is a sweet spot for photos. If you need a specific size, choose Target size and we’ll find the highest quality that fits.

Can I compress PNG files without losing quality?

Yes. PNG stays lossless: we repack the file more efficiently without changing a single pixel. For much bigger savings, compress PNG photos to WebP or AVIF.

Can I change the settings after compressing?

Yes. Change the quality, size or format and press Apply changes: each image is made again from its original, so nothing is compressed twice. Remove the step from an image to get the original back, or press ⌘Z (Ctrl+Z) to undo.

Is there a limit on file size or the number of images?

There’s no limit on how many images you add. Extremely large images (very roughly above 50–150 megapixels, depending on your device’s memory) can’t be processed safely in a browser tab, and we’ll tell you if one is too big.

Does compressing remove photo metadata?

Mostly, yes. Compressed images drop camera details and location data, which is good for privacy. The colour profile is kept so colours stay accurate; you can turn that off under Advanced.

If an image is already as small as it can get, we hand back the original file untouched, metadata included.

Which formats can I compress?

JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF. GIF and BMP files work too and are saved as PNG. HEIC photos from iPhones are coming soon.

Convert while you compress

Changing format often saves far more than compression alone.
