About this tool

Turn an iPhone or Mac movie into a GIF

This tool makes a GIF from a MOV, the format iPhones and Macs save movies in. Choose the moment you want, its width and how many frames a second, and press Make GIF. The movie is read in your browser and never leaves your device.

iPhone movies and Mac screen recordings

iPhones and the Mac’s screen recorder save QuickTime MOV files. To send one moment of it as a GIF, add the movie, choose the start and end, and make the GIF. A movie filmed upright makes an upright GIF.

iPhone movies are usually long and large, so start with a short part and a narrow width: 480 pixels at 10 frames a second is where the page starts.

When the movie won’t open

Newer iPhones record HEVC video. Your browser decodes the movie itself, and not every browser decodes HEVC: Safari does, and so do others on computers with the hardware for it. A movie your browser can’t decode says so when you add it, and never makes an empty GIF. Try Safari, or turn the movie into an H.264 MP4 first with the video to MP4 converter.

Sound, and what a GIF can’t hold

A GIF has no sound and 256 colours. The picture is kept, and the colours are picked from the whole part you choose, so every frame uses the same set.

Questions, answered

Can I make a GIF from an iPhone video?

Yes. Save the movie to Files or AirDrop it to your Mac, add it here, choose a short part and press Make GIF. On an iPhone you can also pick it straight from your photos.

Why does my MOV say the browser can’t decode it?

Your browser decodes the movie itself, and it doesn’t decode every kind of video. HEVC movies from newer iPhones open in Safari. In other browsers, turn the movie into an H.264 MP4 first.

Is a MOV to GIF conversion done on my device?

Yes. The movie is read and the GIF built in your browser, and nothing is sent to a server.

A GIF has 256 colours. Smooth mixes them so gradients keep their shape; flat makes a smaller file.
