About this tool

See what a photo reveals, and remove it without touching the picture.

How it works

  1. Step 1:Add your photos

Drop in JPG, PNG or WebP photos, one or hundreds. Click one to see what it carries: the camera, the dates, the owner’s name and where it was taken.

  2. Step 2:Choose what goes and what stays

Everything takes out the camera, date, location and name details. Location only removes just the position. The photo’s orientation and colour profile stay unless you switch them off. Nothing changes until you press Remove metadata.

  3. Step 3:Download the clean copies

Each photo comes back with the same picture and none of the details you removed. Save one file, or all of them as a .zip.

Questions, answered

What is EXIF data?

EXIF is a block of details that cameras and phones write into every photo: the make and model, the lens, the exposure, the date and time, often the GPS position, sometimes the owner’s name or the camera’s serial number. Photo editors add their own (XMP, IPTC), such as captions, credits and the software used. None of it is part of the picture, but anyone who has the file can read it.

Does removing metadata change the picture?

No. The photo is not decoded or saved again: the data that makes up the picture is copied as it is, and only the blocks of details around it are left out. The pixels are exactly the original’s, so there is no loss of quality, and the file gets smaller by the size of what was removed.

Can I see what a photo reveals before I remove it?

Yes. Click a photo and the Details section lists what it carries: camera, shot settings, dates, owner, and the GPS position as coordinates. The position is shown as plain numbers, not on a map, because showing a map would mean asking another website where the photo was taken.

Which details are removed, and which stay?

Everything removes EXIF, XMP, IPTC and comments from a JPEG; EXIF, text notes and the timestamp from a PNG; EXIF and XMP from a WebP. In a JPEG it also removes anything attached after the picture’s end, such as the video of a motion photo. The colour profile stays, so colours look the same, and so does the orientation, so the photo is not suddenly sideways. Both can be switched off.

Location only removes the GPS position, the IPTC block (which can name places) and any XMP block that holds a position. The camera, the dates and the rest stay.

Why keep the orientation?

Many phones save a photo in one fixed direction and note in the EXIF block how to turn it. Without that note the photo would show sideways. Keeping the orientation leaves a tiny EXIF block that holds only that one number. Switch it off if you want no EXIF block at all.

Which photos can be cleaned?

JPG, PNG and WebP. HEIC, AVIF, GIF and TIFF files stay in the list with a note, because removing their details would mean saving the picture again, which this tool does not do. Convert them to JPG first if you need to.

Does a photo without metadata become anonymous?

It no longer says where or with what it was taken, and nothing in the file names its owner. The picture itself still shows whatever is in it: faces, street signs, a view from a window. The file’s name, and the dates your computer keeps for it, are not inside the photo, so check those too.

Do my photos leave my device?

No. The photos are read and rewritten in your browser, on your own device, so they are never sent anywhere. The small program that does it is fetched the first time you add a photo, and nothing else is requested.
