Make the white in a picture transparent
Drop a logo, icon, drawing or product shot on white. The white is taken out with a soft edge and everything else stays exactly as it was, saved as a transparent PNG or WebP. It works by colour, not AI, so it is instant, downloads nothing and runs on your device.
When removing white is the right tool
Logos exported from an office app, icons from a sticker sheet, clip art and many product photos from shops all come on white. Dropped onto a coloured page or a dark slide, that white shows as a box. Taking the white out leaves only the design, which then sits on anything.
Because only the colour white is taken out, a logo’s colours and lines stay exactly as they are, with no AI guessing at edges. For a photo of a person or a thing on a busy background, use Automatic on the main Remove Background page instead.
Soft edges without a white fringe
Anti-aliased edges are part white: a red letter blends into its white background over a pixel or two. Simply deleting white pixels leaves those in-between pixels pale, a fringe that shows on a dark background. Here each edge pixel becomes partly see-through instead, with the white’s share taken out of its colour, so the red stays red all the way to the edge.
Soft edge widens that blend; Tolerance decides how close to white still counts as background, which helps with JPEGs, whose white is rarely exact.
White inside the design
By default every white pixel goes, inside letters and shapes too, which is what a logo usually needs. A product photo is different: a white mug or the white of an eye should stay. Turn on Keep enclosed areas, and only the white that touches the picture’s edges, through other white, is taken out.
How it works
-
Step 1:Add images on white
PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP or Photoshop files, one or many at once.
-
Step 2:Adjust if you need to
Tolerance for off-white, Soft edge for the blend, Keep enclosed areas for white inside the subject. Nothing changes until you press Cut out.
-
Step 3:Download
Check the preview on its checkerboard, then save a transparent PNG, or a WebP for a smaller file.
Questions, answered
Why is some white left around my logo?
JPEG compression makes the white around edges slightly grey or tinted, so it falls outside the tolerance. Raise Tolerance a little at a time until it goes; if parts of the design start to fade, lower it again and raise Soft edge instead.
Can I remove another colour than white?
Yes. Under Colour to remove, Edge colour takes the most common colour along the picture’s edges, which is usually the backdrop, and Other picks any colour.
Will a white object in a photo disappear too?
It can, since its colour is white as well. Turn on Keep enclosed areas so only white connected to the edges goes, or use Automatic, which finds the subject itself.
PNG or WebP?
PNG keeps every pixel exactly and opens everywhere. WebP is usually much smaller and opens in every current browser and most design apps; it is saved at high quality, so edges stay clean.
