About this tool

Make a signature transparent, ready to sign with

Drop a photo or scan of your signature. The paper’s colour is read from the edges of the picture and taken out, loops of letters included, while the ink keeps its soft edge. You get a transparent PNG cropped tight around the signature, ready for a PDF, a form or an email. Nothing leaves your device.

Why a transparent signature

A signature saved as a plain photo carries its paper with it: a grey or cream rectangle that shows on top of the document you sign, over its lines and its text. With the paper gone, only the ink lands on the page, as if you had signed it there.

The same file works in a PDF signing tool, a Word or Google Docs letter, an email signature or a contract template, and on any colour of background.

How the paper is taken out

Paper is rarely pure white: under a lamp it turns cream, in the shade grey. So the colour to remove is the most common colour along the picture’s edges, where only paper is. Every pixel is then measured against it: close enough and it becomes see-through, far enough and it stays as it is.

Between the two, at the edge of each stroke, a pixel is partly see-through, and the paper’s share is taken out of its colour. That keeps the pen’s soft edge and its true colour, so blue ink stays blue on any background rather than turning grey at the edges.

Getting a clean result from a photo

Sign on plain white paper with a dark pen, and photograph it flat, in even light, filling most of the frame. A shadow across the page is the usual trouble: the darker corner is further from the paper’s colour and may stay. Raise Tolerance until it goes, or crop the shadow away first with Crop.

If faint strokes disappear, lower Tolerance; if a grey haze stays around the ink, raise it. Soft edge decides how gradually the ink fades into the transparency.

How it works

  1. Step 1:Add the photo or scan

JPG, PNG, HEIC from a phone where your browser opens it, or a scanner’s file. Several signatures at once is fine.

  2. Step 2:Press Cut out

The paper’s colour is found for you. Tolerance and Soft edge fine-tune what goes; nothing changes until you press.

  3. Step 3:Download the PNG

The preview shows the signature on a checkerboard, cropped tight. Download it, or turn off Crop to keep the page’s size.

Questions, answered

Is the signature cropped?

Yes, to the box around the ink, so it drops into a document without a wide empty margin. Turn off Crop to the subject to keep the original size, with the signature where it was on the page.

Does this use AI?

No. A signature is ink on paper, so the paper is taken out by its colour, which is exact, instant and needs no download. Automatic, with an AI model, is for photos of people and things.

Will the inside of letters like o and e be see-through too?

Yes. The paper’s colour is taken out everywhere, loops included. Keep enclosed areas does the opposite, for pictures where white inside the subject should stay.

Can I make the signature black, or change its colour?

Not here: the ink keeps the colour it was written in. A dark blue or black pen gives the most official look on a document.

What size should the signature be?

Many forms ask for a signature of a set size or file size. After removing the background, Resize and Compress in the same workspace bring it to the pixels or kilobytes a form asks for, and the transparency stays.
