Questions, answered
Which format should I choose?
WebP is the best all-rounder for websites. AVIF makes the smallest files but takes a little longer to create. JPG opens absolutely everywhere, and PNG is the one to pick when every pixel must stay exactly the same.
Will converting lose quality?
Converting to PNG never loses quality. JPG, WebP and AVIF are lossy, but at the default quality the difference is very hard to see. Use the Quality slider if you want more detail or a smaller file.
What happens to transparent backgrounds?
PNG, WebP and AVIF keep transparency. JPG doesn’t support it, so transparent areas become white. The Converter tells you before you press Convert, and marks each image it applies to.
Do my images leave my device?
No. ToolHero processes your images right in your browser, on your own device. They’re never sent to a server, so they stay private, and big batches don’t wait on your internet connection.
Can I convert and compress the same images?
Yes, in either order. Your images stay in the workspace when you switch tools, and each one is made from its original in a single pass, so nothing is compressed twice. A quality you set in Compress is kept when you convert.
Can I convert HEIC photos from my iPhone?
Not yet, but HEIC support is coming soon. Until then, you can export the photo as a JPG from your Photos app, or set your iPhone camera to “Most Compatible”.
Are animated GIFs supported?
GIFs are converted as still images for now, using the first frame. Animation support is on our list.
