Questions, answered
Will converting GIF to WebP reduce quality?
WebP is lossy: it trades a little detail you’re unlikely to notice for a much smaller file. At the default quality most people can’t tell the difference, and you can raise the quality if you want to be extra careful.
Will the WebP be smaller than the GIF?
Usually, yes. WebP compresses images more efficiently than GIF, so most files get noticeably smaller. You’ll see the exact size of every file, and how much you saved, as soon as it’s converted.
What happens to transparent backgrounds?
They stay transparent. WebP supports transparency with smooth edges, so logos, icons and cut-outs convert cleanly.
Are animated GIFs supported?
Not yet. For animated GIF files, ToolHero converts the first frame into a still WebP. Animation support is on our list.
Can I convert lots of GIF files at once?
Yes. Add as many as you like: they’re converted side by side on your device, and you can download them one by one or all together as a .zip.
Do my images leave my device?
