About this tool

Why convert AVIF to WebP?

  • What you gain

WebP opens in more apps and older browsers than AVIF, while still making small files with transparency.
  • Good to know

The WebP will usually be somewhat larger than the AVIF. Both are lossy, so convert from the original source where you can.

How it works

  1. Step 1:Add your AVIF images

Drop them in, choose them from your device or paste from the clipboard. Add as many as you like: images in other formats convert too.

  2. Step 2:Convert to WebP

WebP is already picked for you. Set the quality if you like, then press Convert and each image becomes a WebP on your device.

  3. Step 3:Download

Save images one by one, or all at once as a .zip.

AVIF vs WebP at a glance

How the two formats compare, so you know what to expect.

  • AVIF

    Your files

The newest format here, built on the AV1 video codec. It makes the smallest files at a given quality.

Best for Websites where every kilobyte counts, and high-quality photos at tiny sizes.

  • WebP

    What you get

A modern web format that makes both photos and graphics smaller than JPG or PNG, with transparency.

Best for Websites, apps and online shops: images that should look good and load fast.

Questions, answered

Will converting AVIF to WebP reduce quality?

A little, as with any re-save. AVIF and WebP both use lossy compression, so converting removes some fine detail. At the default quality it’s very hard to spot, and you can raise the quality for a near-identical result.

Will the WebP be smaller than the AVIF?

Usually not: WebP’s compression is less efficient than AVIF’s, so expect a larger file. You’ll see the exact size of every file before you download it, and you can lower the quality or resize to bring it down.

What happens to transparent backgrounds?

They stay transparent. WebP supports transparency with smooth edges, so logos, icons and cut-outs convert cleanly.

Are animated AVIFs supported?

Not yet. For animated AVIF files, ToolHero converts the first frame into a still WebP. Animation support is on our list.

Can I convert lots of AVIF files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like: they’re converted side by side on your device, and you can download them one by one or all together as a .zip.

Do my images leave my device?

No. The AVIF to WebP conversion runs entirely in your browser, so your images are never sent anywhere. There’s no sign-up and no limit on how many you convert.
