About this tool

Why convert JPG to AVIF?

  • What you gain

AVIF often halves the size of a JPG at similar visual quality, the biggest saving of any format here. Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all show it.
  • Good to know

AVIF takes longer to encode than JPG or WebP, so big batches need a little patience. Older apps and devices may not open AVIF yet.

How it works

  1. Step 1:Add your JPG images

Drop them in, choose them from your device or paste from the clipboard. Add as many as you like: images in other formats convert too.

  2. Step 2:Convert to AVIF

AVIF is already picked for you. Set the quality if you like, then press Convert and each image becomes a AVIF on your device.

  3. Step 3:Download

Save images one by one, or all at once as a .zip.

Questions, answered

Will converting JPG to AVIF reduce quality?

A little, as with any re-save. JPG and AVIF both use lossy compression, so converting removes some fine detail. At the default quality it’s very hard to spot, and you can raise the quality for a near-identical result.

Will the AVIF be smaller than the JPG?

Usually, yes. AVIF compresses images more efficiently than JPG, so most files get noticeably smaller. You’ll see the exact size of every file, and how much you saved, as soon as it’s converted.

Can I convert lots of JPG files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like: they’re converted side by side on your device, and you can download them one by one or all together as a .zip.

Do my images leave my device?

No. The JPG to AVIF conversion runs entirely in your browser, so your images are never sent anywhere. There’s no sign-up and no limit on how many you convert.
