About this tool

Why convert WebP to AVIF?

  • What you gain

AVIF typically saves another 20–30% over WebP at comparable quality, which adds up quickly on image-heavy pages.
  • Good to know

Both formats are lossy, so each conversion loses a little detail. Start from the best-quality source you have and convert only once.

How it works

  1. Step 1:Add your WebP images

Drop them in, choose them from your device or paste from the clipboard. Add as many as you like: images in other formats convert too.

  2. Step 2:Convert to AVIF

AVIF is already picked for you. Set the quality if you like, then press Convert and each image becomes a AVIF on your device.

  3. Step 3:Download

Save images one by one, or all at once as a .zip.

WebP vs AVIF at a glance

How the two formats compare, so you know what to expect.

  • WebP

    Your files

A modern web format that makes both photos and graphics smaller than JPG or PNG, with transparency.

Best for Websites, apps and online shops: images that should look good and load fast.

  • AVIF

    What you get

The newest format here, built on the AV1 video codec. It makes the smallest files at a given quality.

Best for Websites where every kilobyte counts, and high-quality photos at tiny sizes.

Questions, answered

Will converting WebP to AVIF reduce quality?

A little, as with any re-save. WebP and AVIF both use lossy compression, so converting removes some fine detail. At the default quality it’s very hard to spot, and you can raise the quality for a near-identical result.

Will the AVIF be smaller than the WebP?

Usually, yes. AVIF compresses images more efficiently than WebP, so most files get noticeably smaller. You’ll see the exact size of every file, and how much you saved, as soon as it’s converted.

What happens to transparent backgrounds?

They stay transparent. AVIF supports transparency with smooth edges, so logos, icons and cut-outs convert cleanly.

Are animated WebPs supported?

Not yet. For animated WebP files, ToolHero converts the first frame into a still AVIF. Animation support is on our list.

Can I convert lots of WebP files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like: they’re converted side by side on your device, and you can download them one by one or all together as a .zip.

Do my images leave my device?

No. The WebP to AVIF conversion runs entirely in your browser, so your images are never sent anywhere. There’s no sign-up and no limit on how many you convert.
