JPEG to JPG converter: a lossless rename
JPEG and JPG are one format with two spellings of the same ending, so nothing needs converting. ToolHero renames .jpeg files to .jpg without re-saving them. The renamed file has the same SHA-256 fingerprint as your original, which proves every byte, and so the picture quality, is untouched.
One format, two spellings
JPEG is named after the committee that wrote the standard, the Joint Photographic Experts Group. Files that use it can end in .jpeg, .jpg or .jpe, and the data inside is the same kind whichever spelling you see. The short .jpg is the most common.
MS-DOS allowed only three letters after the dot in a file name, which suits .jpg. Systems and apps without that limit often write the full .jpeg.
Neither one is better. The trouble is software that checks the ending and accepts only one spelling, usually .jpg. Changing the ending doesn’t convert anything, so a rename gets you past that check without touching the picture.
Check that nothing changed
A SHA-256 hash is a fingerprint of a file’s contents. Change a single byte and the fingerprint changes completely. Compare your original with the renamed copy:
Get-FileHash photo.jpeg, photo.jpgshasum -a 256 photo.jpeg photo.jpgBoth lines show the same 64 characters. Our automated tests make the same comparison in Chromium, Firefox and WebKit, for a single download and for the files inside a .zip.
Why convert JPEG to JPG?
How it works
-
Step 1:Add .jpeg files
Drop them in, choose them from your device or paste them. One photo or a few hundred, it’s the same quick job.
-
Step 2:Leave “Rename to .jpg (lossless)” on
This page picks it for you. Press Rename: nothing is encoded, so even a big batch is ready almost at once.
-
Step 3:Download
Save the .jpg files one by one, or as a single .zip whose names all end in .jpg.
Questions, answered
Is JPEG better quality than JPG?
No, they’re identical. The letters after the dot don’t change how a picture is stored or how it looks.
Why do some files end in .jpeg and others in .jpg?
History and habit. MS-DOS file names allowed only three letters after the dot, which .jpg fits, and the short spelling is still the most common one. Systems without that limit often write the full .jpeg.
What is a SHA-256 hash, and why should it match?
It’s a 64-character fingerprint calculated from a file’s contents. Two files with the same SHA-256 hold the same bytes, so a match proves the rename didn’t re-save or alter your photo.
Can I change .jpeg to .jpg without any tool?
Yes, one file at a time. On Windows, select View > Show > File name extensions in File Explorer, then rename the file. On a Mac, select the file, press Return, change the ending and press Return again; Finder may ask you to confirm the new extension. ToolHero saves time with batches and on phones.
Does the renamed file keep my photo’s date and camera details?
Everything stored inside the file stays, because the bytes are identical. The date your computer shows for the file may be today, since the download is a new file.
Is anything sent over the internet when I rename?
No. The rename happens in your browser, on your device. Your photos aren’t sent anywhere, and there’s nothing to sign up for.

Nothing is re-saved, so there’s no quality to pick. Each JPEG keeps every byte; only its name changes to .jpg.
