Compress an image to 200 KB for documents and photos
Add the file and press Compress: it comes back as a JPG of no more than 200 KB. In our tests an A4 page scanned at 150 dpi kept every pixel at quality 75 and weighed 171,163 bytes, and a 300 dpi scan was resized to 1994×2821. Photos shrink only as far as 200 KB needs.
Our test files, compressed to 200 KB
The same three files on every size page, here with the 200 KB settings.
- 12 MP phone photo 3024×4032, 5.17 MB → 1175×1566 at quality 40 194,711 bytes
- A4 form scanned at 300 dpi 2480×3508, 3.22 MB → 1994×2821 at quality 45 199,147 bytes
- Signature on white paper 1800×750 PNG, 167 KB → full size at quality 75 38,702 bytes
A 150 dpi scan can keep its full size
200 KB is roomy for a scanned page. Our A4 form scanned at 150 dpi went through without resizing and at the default quality of 75, finishing at 171 KB. The same page at 300 dpi carries four times the pixels, so it was resized to 1994×2821, still about 241 pixels per inch of paper and sharp enough to print.
For multi-page documents, compress each page as its own image and check the site’s rules for how many files it takes.
A phone photo at 200 KB
Our 12 MP test photo ended at 1175×1566 pixels, about 1.8 megapixels. That is plenty for any screen and prints cleanly at roughly 10 × 13 cm. Faces and fine textures hold up because the quality stays at 40 or above.
Need more pixels in the same 200 KB? Crop away what you don’t need first, or pick WebP or AVIF under Format if the place you’re sending it accepts those.
How it works
-
Step 1:Pick the files
Scans, documents and photos from your device: drop them in or choose them, as many as you like.
-
Step 2:Compress
This page has already chosen JPG, a 200 KB limit and Allow smaller dimensions. One press does the lot.
-
Step 3:Download
Look over the sizes and dimensions on each file, then save them singly or as one .zip.
Kilobytes and kibibytes at 200 KB
A limit of 200 KB is 200,000 bytes to most websites and 204,800 to the ones that count in binary kibibytes. ToolHero always aims at 200,000 bytes or less, so the gap of 4,800 bytes is a safety margin rather than a risk.
Questions, answered
Why did my scan keep its full size at 200 KB?
Because it already fitted at the default quality. ToolHero only resizes when quality alone can’t reach the limit, and a page scanned at 150 dpi rarely needs it at this size.
Is a 200 KB photo good enough to print?
For small prints, yes. A 12 MP photo resized to fit 200 KB keeps about 1175×1566 pixels, which prints at roughly 10 × 13 cm with good detail. For larger prints, send the original.
Can the result get closer to 200 KB than 171 KB?
Not on this page: quality is capped at 75 when aiming at a size, and a file that fits at 75 is left there. For a larger, finer file, use Quality mode on the Compress page and choose a higher number.
Does the 200 KB limit apply to each image or to the whole batch?
To each image. Every file is fitted under 200 KB on its own, so ten images add up to as much as 2 MB in the .zip.
Will the compressed scan still look like the paper original?
Very close. Text, stamps and signatures stay sharp; what goes is mostly scanner noise and the faint texture of the paper.

Compression
We find the highest quality that fits, and shrink the image only if it still doesn’t.
When even the lowest quality is too big, the image is scaled down until it fits.
