About this tool

A PDF to 50 KB compressor that keeps the text sharp

Each PDF is made at most 50 KB, with the gentlest settings that fit. A 3.2 MB scanned form came out at 49.5 KB, its pictures at 80 dpi at quality 65. If it can’t get that small at a readable quality, you get the smallest copy and a note. It stays on your device.

What 50 KB means for a PDF

50 KB is about the size of a short text document, so pictures get almost no room. a form scanned at 300 dpi (3.2 MB) comes out at 49.5 KB, its pictures at 80 dpi and quality 65; a phone photo on three A4 pages (5.2 MB) comes out at 48.1 KB, its pictures at 96 dpi and quality 45. A PDF of mostly text is already below it: a 30-page text report (87.1 KB) already fits, so only its packing changes, to 23 KB.

The pictures are the only thing that gives. Everything written or drawn on the page stays exactly as it is, so a form with a lot of text and one small picture is the kind of file that fits this size without a visible change.

How a PDF reaches 50 KB

Compress PDF tries the gentlest settings first and goes down a step at a time until the file fits: pictures at up to 300 dpi and high quality, then lower. Text and drawings are never touched. For 50 KB our phone photo PDF settled on 96 dpi at quality 45, and the scanned form on 80 dpi at quality 65.

50 KB here means 50,000 bytes, the stricter way to read it, so a file that passes here passes a limit counted in KiB too. The floor is 72 dpi at quality 30: below that pictures stop being readable, so the PDF stays bigger than the limit and says so.

Before you send a 50 KB PDF

At this size scanned small print starts to blur, because the scan comes down to 80 dpi. If the page has a signature, a stamp or a handwritten line, look at the result at 100% before you send it, and try 100 KB if it is too soft.

How it works

  1. Step 1:Add your PDFs

Drop them in or choose them from your device. Each one shows its first page.

  2. Step 2:Compress to 50 KB

The limit is already set in the panel. Press Compress when you’re ready; nothing changes before that.

  3. Step 3:Check the size and save

Each PDF shows the size it reached. Save one file, or all of them as a .zip.

Questions, answered

Can a scanned PDF really get down to 50 KB?

Often, at a price in sharpness. Our two-page scanned form came to 49.5 KB at 80 dpi at quality 65. A page of clean print stays legible; a faint pencil note or a photograph on the page will not.

Why does my PDF look soft after fitting a very small limit?

Because the pictures inside were brought down to a low resolution, and saved at a lower quality, to save bytes. Text and drawings are not pictures, so they stay as sharp as they were. Pick a bigger limit for a sharper picture.

Is a PDF with no pictures already under 50 KB?

Usually, if it is short. Our 30-page text report is 23 KB after compressing, so it fits with room to spare. Long documents with many fonts or form fields can need more.

We use the gentlest settings that fit. If a PDF can’t get that small at a quality you can read, you get the smallest we can make, and it says so.

What changes

Only pictures change: they come down to the size they’re shown at and are saved again. Text, vector drawings, links, bookmarks and form fields stay exactly as they are. The file is repacked too, so even a PDF without pictures can get smaller. Page thumbnails go, and so does the editing data some design apps keep inside a PDF: a PDF saved from Illustrator can’t be opened again as an editable Illustrator file.

PDFs with a password or a digital signature are left as they are: compressing them would remove the protection or break the signature.
