About this tool

WebP to GIF converter that keeps the animation

Convert a WebP to GIF in your browser. An animated WebP keeps every frame, its timing and its loop count, and a clear background stays clear. A still WebP becomes a still GIF. A GIF holds 256 colours, so photos lose shades. Our 10-frame test sticker became a 1.5 KB GIF.

Every frame of the animation is kept

Most animated WebPs store each frame as a small patch to draw over the one before, sometimes with a command to clear the patch afterwards. ToolHero plays that back the way a browser does, so each frame of your GIF is the picture you would see at that moment, not a raw patch.

Then it writes the GIF with the same trick in GIF’s own form: after the first frame, each frame holds only the rectangle that changed, and the pixels inside it that didn’t change are marked clear. That keeps the file as small as a GIF can be. A WebP that loops for ever loops for ever as a GIF, and one that plays three times plays three times.

How fast the GIF plays

A WebP frame lasts a number of milliseconds; a GIF frame lasts a number of hundredths of a second. ToolHero rounds each delay to the nearest hundredth and carries the rounding into the next frame, so a 33 ms frame, a 34 ms one and another 33 ms one add up to exactly 0.10 s.

The shortest delay it writes is 0.02 s, which is 50 frames a second. Many viewers play a GIF frame shorter than that as 0.1 s, so a WebP recorded at 60 frames a second plays a little slower as a GIF rather than much slower.

The 256-colour limit, and the size

One colour table serves the whole GIF. If every frame together uses 255 colours or fewer, as stickers, cartoons and screen recordings often do, the table is exactly those colours and nothing changes. A photo or a video clip is reduced to 255 colours picked from all its frames, and a fine pattern of dots (dithering) hides the steps in a sky or a skin tone.

Expect a bigger file than the WebP. A WebP compresses motion the way a video does, and a GIF only knows which pixels changed, so a photographic clip often grows to several times its size. A few flat colours go the other way: our test sticker, measured below, shrank to under a third.

Long and large clips

A GIF is built on your device, so a very long or very large animation is refused with a message instead of freezing your browser, and phones allow less than computers. Make it shorter or smaller first, and it converts.

Why convert WebP to GIF?

  • What you gain

GIF is the animation format every chat app, forum and editor accepts, and an animated WebP often is not accepted.
  • Good to know

GIF is limited to 256 colours, so a photographic clip gets grainier and several times bigger. Soft transparent edges turn stepped.
  • Measured on our test files

Our 10-frame sticker, a 5,244-byte animated WebP with a clear background, became a 1,509-byte GIF with all ten frames and their timing: three flat colours, so it is 0.29× the size. Our 8-frame photo animation, 33,432 bytes, became a 127,990-byte GIF with 255 colours (3.83×). Our 1200×1600 photo, a still WebP of 402,074 bytes, became a 1,313,146-byte GIF (3.27×).

How it works

  1. Step 1:Add your WebP images

Drop in animated stickers and clips, or still images. Add as many as you like.

  2. Step 2:Convert

GIF is already picked. Press Convert and each WebP becomes a GIF on your device, frame by frame.

  3. Step 3:Download

Save the GIFs one by one, or all at once as a .zip.

WebP vs GIF at a glance

How the two formats compare, so you know what to expect.

  • WebP

    Your files

A modern web format that makes both photos and graphics smaller than JPG or PNG, with transparency.

Best for Websites, apps and online shops: images that should look good and load fast.

  • GIF

    What you get

A veteran format limited to 256 colours, still everywhere thanks to short looping animations.

Best for Simple animations, reactions and memes.

Questions, answered

Will my animated WebP still move as a GIF?

Yes. Every frame is kept with its timing, and the animation loops as often as the WebP did. A still WebP gives a still GIF.

Why is the GIF so much bigger than my WebP?

WebP compresses motion like a video does, while a GIF stores which pixels changed and little more. Photographic clips grow several times over, and flat-colour stickers can even shrink.

Why do the edges of my transparent sticker look rough?

A GIF has one clear colour and no partial transparency. Pixels at least half opaque become solid and the rest become clear, so a soft shadow or a feathered edge turns stepped.

Does the GIF play at the same speed?

Yes, up to 50 frames a second. A GIF counts time in hundredths of a second and ToolHero never writes less than two of them, so a faster WebP plays slightly slower.

How long an animation can I convert?

It depends on the size: a short clip of a few hundred pixels is quick, and a long or large one is refused with a message. A phone allows less than a computer.

Is my WebP sent anywhere to turn it into a GIF?

No. Your browser reads the frames and writes the GIF itself, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.
