About this tool

PSD to JPG converter for Photoshop files

ToolHero turns a Photoshop file into a JPG without Photoshop. It reads the flattened copy of the picture that Photoshop saves next to the layers, so you get what the document looked like when it was last saved. Layers, text and effects merge into one image, transparent areas turn white, and the file never leaves your device.

What ToolHero reads from a PSD

A PSD holds every layer, mask and adjustment, and, when it’s saved with Maximize Compatibility, one extra flattened copy of the whole picture. Other apps show that copy. ToolHero reads it directly instead of rebuilding the layers.

Because nothing is redrawn, layer styles, blend modes and adjustment layers look exactly as Photoshop rendered them, and hidden layers stay hidden. What you get is what the PSD showed when it was last saved.

When a PSD has no flattened copy

Photoshop can leave the flattened copy out to save space: that’s what switching off Maximize Compatibility does. Such a file holds only layers, and ToolHero doesn’t guess at them, because a guess could look different from your design. It tells you as soon as you add the file. To fix it once:

  1. Open the file in Photoshop.
  2. Choose File > Save As and keep Photoshop as the format.
  3. Make sure Maximize Compatibility is ticked in the box that appears, save, then add the new file.

To have it every time, set Preferences > File Handling > Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility to Always.

Colours, print files and transparency

An RGB document keeps its colour profile in the JPG, so wide-gamut work in Display P3 or Adobe RGB looks as it does in Photoshop. CMYK documents made for print are converted to the sRGB colours screens use, through the profile saved in the file, and Lab documents are converted too.

16-bit and 32-bit documents become ordinary 8-bit JPGs, and a 32-bit one is converted to sRGB as well. JPG can’t store see-through pixels, so transparent areas are filled with white. To keep them, use PSD to PNG instead.

Why convert PSD to JPG?

  • What you gain

A JPG opens on every phone, computer and website, while a PSD needs Photoshop or one of the few editors that read it. You get the picture as Photoshop last saved it, in a small file.
  • Good to know

Layers are merged into one picture and see-through areas turn white. The PSD has to be saved with Maximize Compatibility on; if it wasn’t, ToolHero says how to save it again.
  • Measured on our layered test PSD

Our 360 × 480 test document, a photo with a caption banner and a badge on layers of their own, is a 798,048-byte PSD; its flattened copy takes about half of that. At the default quality of 75 it became a 28,189-byte JPG: 0.035× the size of the PSD.

Tested with ToolHero’s own PSD reader (Rust, moxcms 0.9.1) reading the PSD and MozJPEG via @jsquash/jpeg 1.6.0 (mozjpeg 3.3.1) writing the JPG on a Mac18,5 (Apple M6) on macOS 27.0.1, 2026-10-14. The output was byte-identical in Chromium, Firefox and WebKit.

How it works

  1. Step 1:Add your Photoshop files

Drop PSD or PSB files in, or choose them from your device. Each one gets a preview made from its flattened image.

  2. Step 2:Pick a quality, then convert

JPG is picked already. The default quality of 75 suits sharing; raise it for printing. Then press Convert.

  3. Step 3:Download the JPGs

One by one, or all together in a .zip. Your PSDs stay exactly as they were.

PSD vs JPG at a glance

How the two formats compare, so you know what to expect.

  • PSD

    Your files

Adobe Photoshop’s working file: every layer, mask and effect, plus one flattened copy of the whole picture.

Best for Editing in Photoshop. To share the picture itself, a JPG or PNG copy goes further.

  • JPG

    What you get

The classic photo format. Every phone, computer, app and website has opened JPGs for decades.

Best for Photos you want to share anywhere: email, chat, print services and older software.

Questions, answered

Do I need Photoshop to turn a PSD into a JPG?

No. ToolHero reads the PSD itself, in your browser, on Windows, a Mac, Linux or a phone. Photoshop only matters for a file saved without Maximize Compatibility, which has to be saved again once.

Why does ToolHero say my PSD has no flattened image?

It was saved with Maximize Compatibility off, so Photoshop kept only the layers. Open it in Photoshop, choose File > Save As, keep the Photoshop format with Maximize Compatibility ticked, then add the new file.

Are hidden layers part of the JPG?

No. The JPG shows what was visible when the PSD was saved. Hidden layers aren’t part of the flattened image Photoshop stores.

Can I convert a CMYK PSD made for print?

Yes. ToolHero converts CMYK to screen colours through the profile saved in the PSD, the same way in every browser. A CMYK file without a profile gets a simple standard conversion, so its colours can be a little off.

Does it open PSB files too?

Yes. PSB is Photoshop’s large document format, for pictures wider or taller than 30,000 pixels or files over 2 GB, and ToolHero reads it the same way. The biggest ones can be more than a phone’s memory allows.

Is my design sent anywhere?

No. The PSD is read and the JPG is written on your device, so unreleased artwork stays private.
