About this tool

PSD to PNG converter that keeps transparency

ToolHero turns a Photoshop file into a PNG in your browser, with no Photoshop needed. The PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, so a logo or cut-out on a clear background stays clear. You get the flattened picture Photoshop saved with the file: layers, text and effects merge into one image, and the PSD never leaves your device.

Transparent layers stay transparent

When a document has no Background layer, Photoshop saves the transparency of the whole picture along with its flattened copy. ToolHero carries it into the PNG with smooth edges, so a logo, a product cut-out or a sticker sits on any page or slide without a white box around it.

In RGB and grayscale documents, Photoshop stores half-transparent pixels blended over white. ToolHero takes that white back out, so soft shadows and anti-aliased edges keep their real colour instead of a pale fringe.

One flat picture from all the layers

Text keeps its look but can’t be edited any more: a PNG holds pixels, not type. Masks, blend modes, adjustment layers and layer styles are already applied, exactly as Photoshop rendered them, and hidden layers are left out.

Keep the PSD for future changes. The PNG is the copy to share, post or place in a slide deck or document.

A PSD saved without its flattened copy

Some PSDs are saved with Maximize Compatibility switched off, and then the file carries layers only. ToolHero says so the moment you add it, rather than rebuilding the layers in its own way. Save it again from Photoshop with that box ticked, through File > Save As, and add the new copy.

Deep colour and file size

16-bit and 32-bit documents become 8-bit PNGs, which every app opens. A 32-bit HDR document is converted from linear light, and anything brighter than white is clipped; the file says so when that happens.

PNG keeps every pixel, so a design full of photos makes a much bigger file than a JPG. For a small copy to send, PSD to JPG is the better pick.

Why convert PSD to PNG?

  • What you gain

PNG keeps every pixel of the flattened design and its transparent areas, and opens everywhere, so it’s the easy way to hand artwork to someone without Photoshop.
  • Good to know

Layers, text and effects become one flat picture, and a photo makes a big PNG. The PSD has to be saved with Maximize Compatibility on, or there is nothing flat to read.
  • Measured on our layered test PSD

The same 360 × 480 test document, a 798,048-byte PSD with three layers, became a 262,628-byte PNG: 0.33× the size of the PSD, with every pixel of its flattened image kept exactly.

Tested with ToolHero’s own PSD reader (Rust, moxcms 0.9.1) reading the PSD and png 0.17.10 + oxipng 9.1.1 writing the PNG on a Mac18,5 (Apple M6) on macOS 27.0.1, 2026-10-14. The output was byte-identical in Chromium, Firefox and WebKit.

How it works

  1. Step 1:Drop in the PSDs

PSD files and large-format PSB files both work, as many as you like, mixed with other images if you want.

  2. Step 2:Convert to PNG

PNG is already selected and needs no quality setting, since it’s lossless. Press Convert to make each PNG on your device.

  3. Step 3:Save the PNGs

Download them separately or together as a .zip, transparency and all.

PSD vs PNG at a glance

How the two formats compare, so you know what to expect.

  • PSD

    Your files

Adobe Photoshop’s working file: every layer, mask and effect, plus one flattened copy of the whole picture.

Best for Editing in Photoshop. To share the picture itself, a JPG or PNG copy goes further.

  • PNG

    What you get

A lossless format that keeps every pixel exactly. Great for screenshots, logos and anything with text or sharp edges.

Best for Screenshots, logos, diagrams, cut-outs with transparency, and master copies you will edit again.

Questions, answered

Will the PNG keep a transparent background?

Yes, when the PSD has one: a document without a Background layer saves its transparency, and the PNG keeps it, soft edges included. A document with a Background layer is opaque, and so is its PNG.

Can I still edit the text after converting?

No. A PNG holds pixels, so text, shapes and layers become part of one picture. Keep the PSD for changes.

Why is my PNG bigger than a JPG of the same PSD?

PNG keeps every pixel exactly, which takes room for photos. For a smaller file to send, use PSD to JPG. Logos and flat artwork often make small PNGs anyway.

What happens to 16-bit and 32-bit PSDs?

They become 8-bit PNGs that every app opens. A 32-bit HDR document is converted from linear light, and highlights brighter than white are clipped; the file is marked when that happens.

What if my PSD was saved without Maximize Compatibility?

Then it has no flattened picture to convert, and ToolHero tells you instead of guessing. Save it again from Photoshop with Maximize Compatibility ticked, and add the new file.

Does ToolHero keep a copy of my PSD?

No. Nothing is sent to a server: the conversion runs in your browser, and when you close the tab the files are gone from ToolHero.
