About this tool

TIFF to PNG converter that keeps every pixel

Convert a TIFF to PNG to keep every pixel in a format that every browser, phone and website shows. ToolHero reads the TIFF on your device and writes a lossless PNG of its first page, transparency included. Our chart, saved as three different TIFFs, always became the same 2.7 KB PNG.

Lossless in, lossless out

Most TIFFs and every PNG store pixels without loss, so the picture survives the move exactly: the same colours, the same edges, the same see-through areas. What changes is the packing.

TIFF offers many ways to arrange and squeeze its data: in strips or tiles, one channel after another or all mixed together, with LZW, ZIP or PackBits. ToolHero reads them all, and we checked that a flat-colour chart stored three different ways decodes to identical pixels each time.

How big the PNG gets

For graphics, diagrams and screenshots PNG usually wins clearly. Our chart shrank to 0.091× of its LZW TIFF and to 0.28× of a tightly packed palette TIFF. A photo saves less: its uncompressed TIFF of 231 KB became a PNG of 121 KB, half the size.

Black-and-white scans saved with fax compression are the exception, since that scheme spends just one bit on a pixel: ours grew from 1.5 KB to 2.2 KB as a PNG, still tiny, and far smaller than a JPG of it.

Transparency, 16 bits and pages

An alpha channel comes across unchanged, soft edges included, and a TIFF saved with premultiplied alpha is turned into ordinary transparency first, so its edges don’t darken. 16-bit TIFFs become 8-bit PNGs, every value rounded to the nearest step; our 16-bit test photo with a soft transparent edge came out at 0.45× the size.

Only the first page of a multi-page TIFF becomes a PNG. The Converter points out such files before you start.

Why convert TIFF to PNG?

  • What you gain

PNG keeps every pixel and the alpha channel like TIFF does, but every browser, phone and website shows it, and it often packs graphics and scans tighter.
  • Good to know

ToolHero’s PNG holds one page at 8 bits a channel, so multi-page and 16-bit TIFFs give up their extra pages and finest tones.
  • Measured on our test TIFFs

Our 400×300 flat-colour chart as an LZW planar TIFF (30,027 bytes), a tiled ZIP TIFF (13,141 bytes) and a palette PackBits TIFF (9,739 bytes) became the same 2,726-byte PNG. A 240×320 photo, uncompressed at 230,641 bytes, became a 121,299-byte PNG: 0.53× the size.

Tested with the tiff 0.11.3 crate in ToolHero’s raster engine reading the TIFF and png 0.17.10 + oxipng 9.1.1 writing the PNG on a Mac18,5 (Apple M6) on macOS 27.0.1, 2026-10-14. The output was byte-identical in Chromium, Firefox and WebKit.

How it works

  1. Step 1:Add TIF or TIFF files

Drop them in or choose them from your device: scans, exports from design apps, or files from a print shop.

  2. Step 2:Convert to PNG

PNG is lossless, so there’s no quality to choose. Press Convert and each TIFF becomes a PNG of its first page.

  3. Step 3:Download the PNGs

Save them separately or in one .zip. Your TIFFs are left exactly as they were.

TIFF vs PNG at a glance

How the two formats compare, so you know what to expect.

  • TIFF

    Your files

The workhorse of scanners, print shops and archives: one file can hold several pages, CMYK colour and 16 bits a channel.

Best for Scans, print-ready artwork and master copies kept in professional software.

  • PNG

    What you get

A lossless format that keeps every pixel exactly. Great for screenshots, logos and anything with text or sharp edges.

Best for Screenshots, logos, diagrams, cut-outs with transparency, and master copies you will edit again.

Questions, answered

Do .tif and .tiff files convert the same way?

Yes. They are two endings for the same format, and ToolHero goes by what is inside the file rather than its name.

Does the PNG keep my TIFF’s transparent background?

Yes. The alpha channel is copied as it is, soft edges included. A TIFF without one gives a PNG with a solid background.

What happens to a 16-bit TIFF?

It becomes an 8-bit PNG: each channel’s value is rounded to the nearest of 256 steps, which looks the same on screen. Keep the TIFF if you still edit in 16 bits.

Can a PNG hold all the pages of my TIFF?

No, a PNG holds one image, so you get the first page. The Converter marks multi-page TIFFs before you press Convert.

Why is my photo PNG only a little smaller than the TIFF?

Photos are full of fine detail that lossless formats can’t pack tightly. Our test photo’s PNG was 0.53× of its uncompressed TIFF; for a much smaller file, convert to JPG instead.

Are TIFF files sent to a server to be converted?

No. Your browser decodes each TIFF and writes the PNG on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere, and there’s no sign-up.
