JFIF to PNG converter for lossless copies
JFIF is a JPEG photo with a different ending. Converting it to PNG gives you a lossless copy that survives any number of edits and saves. The PNG is much larger, 5.4× on our test photo, and won’t recover detail the JPEG already lost. If you only need a .jpg name, rename it losslessly instead.
Where .jfif files come from
Most .jfif files are pictures saved from a browser on Windows. If an image link has no ending of its own, Chrome and Edge borrow the one Windows lists for JPEG images, and plenty of PCs list .jfif. Inside, it’s an ordinary JPEG.
To make future downloads end in .jpg, one registry value needs changing. Our JFIF to JPG guide walks through it, including a one-line command you can undo.
When a PNG beats keeping the JFIF
- You’ll edit it more than once. Every JPEG save throws away a little more detail. PNG saves without loss, so the tenth round of edits looks like the first.
- An app asks for PNG. Some design tools, slide templates and sticker makers only take PNG files.
- You’ll add text or a cut-out. Lettering and hard edges you add later stay crisp, and you can make the background transparent in an editor. Converting alone won’t make it see-through.
Want a smaller file or just a .jpg name? Then PNG is the wrong turn: it’s far bigger than the JPEG inside your JFIF.
Why convert JFIF to PNG?
How it works
-
Step 1:Add the .jfif files
Drop them here, choose them from your device or paste from the clipboard. ToolHero reads the JPEG inside, whatever the ending says.
-
Step 2:Press Convert
PNG is picked already, and it has no quality slider because nothing is thrown away. Each picture becomes a PNG right on your device.
-
Step 3:Save the PNGs
Download each one, or all of them as a .zip, named like the originals with .png at the end.
JFIF vs PNG at a glance
How the two formats compare, so you know what to expect.
JFIF
Your filesA JPEG photo with an unusual ending, often given to pictures saved from a browser on Windows.
Best for Nothing a .jpg can’t do: it holds the same JPEG data under another name.
PNG
What you getA lossless format that keeps every pixel exactly. Great for screenshots, logos and anything with text or sharp edges.
Best for Screenshots, logos, diagrams, cut-outs with transparency, and master copies you will edit again.

Questions, answered
Will a PNG made from a JFIF look sharper?
No. The PNG copies the JPEG’s pixels exactly, including any softness or blockiness they already had. What it adds is safety: later edits won’t make it worse.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the JFIF?
JPEG drops detail you’re unlikely to notice, while PNG keeps every pixel. On our test photo the PNG was 5.4× the size. For photos you only want to share, a .jpg is the better ending.
Can the PNG have a transparent background?
Not straight away. A JFIF has no transparency to carry over, so the background stays solid. Cut it out later in an editor with layers, and the PNG will keep the transparency from then on.
Should I pick PNG or JPG for my JFIF?
Pick JPG when a site or app only wants a .jpg: for a JFIF that’s a lossless rename. Pick PNG when you’ll keep editing, or when something asks for PNG by name.
Do my JFIF photos stay on my device?
Yes. They’re read and converted inside your browser and never sent anywhere. You don’t need an account either.
