About this tool

Convert PNG to SVG, a vector you can scale

Drop a PNG to trace it into an SVG made of vector shapes. Logos, icons and line art come out crisp at any size, usually as a file of a few kilobytes, and a transparent background stays transparent. Photos turn into flat, poster-like art. Everything runs on your device, and nothing is traced until you press Vectorize.

Why turn a PNG into a vector

A PNG stores a fixed grid of pixels. Blow up a 300-pixel logo for a banner or a printed sign and every edge turns into stairs. An SVG stores the shapes themselves, so the same file is sharp as a favicon and as a poster, and you can change a colour or move a shape in any vector editor.

That makes a PNG to vector converter the quickest way to rescue a logo when the original design file is lost, or to get a cutting file for a vinyl cutter, a laser engraver or embroidery software that only accepts vectors.

Transparent PNGs stay transparent

Most logos are saved as PNG precisely because of the see-through background. The tracer treats every pixel that is less than half visible as background and draws no shape there, so the SVG drops onto any colour without a white box around it.

Soft, feathered edges become clean ones. If a drop shadow or glow matters, keep it in a separate PNG layer, or raise Colours so its darker ring gets a shape of its own.

Getting a clean trace

Logo is picked for you. Colours is a ceiling, not a target: shades that end up alike are merged, so set it to the number your logo really has, two for a one-colour mark on a background, four or five for most brand logos. Fewer colours also merge the faint halo around anti-aliased edges, which can show up as thin slivers when Remove specks is set to keep everything.

Smoothness at Sharp keeps straight edges and pointed corners, the right choice for logos and lettering; curves can make small logos wobble. Slide it up for Drawing, where hand-drawn strokes look natural as curves. Remove specks clears stray dots from a compressed or scanned PNG.

A pencil sketch or a signature saved as PNG traces better with Drawing, which turns dark lines black and leaves the paper out.

How it works

  1. Step 1:Add your PNG

Drop it, paste it or choose it from your device. Add several to convert them together.

  2. Step 2:Match the preset to the picture

Logo for marks and icons, Drawing for line art, Photo for pictures. Adjust colours, smoothness and specks, then press Vectorize.

  3. Step 3:Check it, then save the SVG

The preview draws the SVG as it will be saved; Compare lays it over the original. Download one file, or all of them as a .zip.

Questions, answered

Is converting a PNG to SVG the same as renaming it?

No. Renaming a file to .svg, or wrapping the PNG inside an SVG, still leaves a grid of pixels that blurs when enlarged. This page traces the picture: it finds the edges between colours and writes them as vector paths, which is what makes an SVG scalable.

How many colours should a logo have?

As many as you can count in it, plus one for the background if it isn’t transparent. Eight is a ceiling: similar shades are merged. Without speck removal, a two-colour logo traced with eight colours gains thin slivers along its edges where the PNG blends one colour into the next, and with two it doesn’t. Fewer colours make cleaner shapes and a smaller file.

My PNG is tiny. Will the SVG be sharp?

The outlines will be sharp at any size, but the tracer can only follow detail the pixels show. A 64-pixel icon gives rounded, simplified shapes. Use the largest copy of the logo you can find; a 500-pixel or bigger PNG traces noticeably closer to the original design.

Can I edit the SVG afterwards?

Yes. Each colour area is its own path, so Illustrator, Inkscape, Figma or Affinity Designer can recolour it, delete parts or join it with other artwork. Neighbouring paths of the same colour are grouped, so a colour is quick to change everywhere it appears.

Will a PNG photo work?

It will trace, with Photo picked, into flat areas of colour, like a screen print. That suits posters and stylised artwork. For an exact photo at a bigger size, an SVG is the wrong format: keep the PNG or JPG.
