About this tool

Convert any image to SVG

Drop any picture to convert it to SVG: PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP, TIFF, Photoshop and icon files all work. The tracer turns the bitmap into vector shapes, so logos and drawings stay sharp at any size and photos become flat-colour art. It runs on your device, and you see the result before you save it.

Bitmap in, vector out

Every format this page opens is a bitmap: a grid of coloured dots, whether it is called PNG, JPG, BMP or TIFF. SVG is the odd one out, a description of shapes. A vector image converter can’t just repack one into the other; it has to look at the dots and work out where the shapes are.

That is what tracing does here. Areas of similar colour are grouped, their outlines followed and smoothed, and each becomes a filled path in the SVG. The cleaner the picture, the fewer and tidier the paths.

What happens to each format

PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF and icons keep their transparency: see-through areas get no shape. An animated GIF or WebP is traced from its first frame, a multi-page TIFF from its first page, an icon from the largest image inside it, and a Photoshop file from its flattened image with the layers merged.

JPG and most BMP files have no transparency, so their background is traced like everything else. iPhone HEIC photos open where your browser can decode them. An SVG is a drawing already, so it is left as it is, with a note saying so.

How big the SVG gets

An SVG’s size depends on how many shapes the picture needs, not on its pixel count. A logo or an icon usually comes out at a few kilobytes, smaller than the PNG it came from. A scanned page of handwriting can reach a few hundred kilobytes, and a photo traced at 1 megapixel with 24 colours came to about 0.4 MB.

To shrink a file, lower Colours, raise Remove specks or move Smoothness to Sharp, which draws straight segments instead of curves.

How it works

  1. Step 1:Add any image

Drop files of any of these formats, mix them freely, or paste a picture from the clipboard.

  2. Step 2:Choose Logo, Drawing or Photo

Each preset suits a kind of picture and sets its own colours, smoothness and speck removal. Change them if you like, then press Vectorize.

  3. Step 3:Save the SVGs

Compare each one with its original and download them one by one or as a .zip.

Questions, answered

Which image formats can I convert to SVG?

PNG, JPG and JPEG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP, TIFF, ICO and CUR icons, and Photoshop PSD and PSB files. HEIC photos from an iPhone work where your browser can decode them, which includes Safari.

What is the difference between a bitmap and a vector?

A bitmap stores colour dot by dot, at a fixed resolution, so enlarging it shows the dots. A vector stores shapes as maths: lines, curves and fills that are recalculated at any size. Logos, icons and diagrams belong in vectors; photos belong in bitmaps.

Can I convert several images to SVG at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like; with nothing selected, Vectorize traces them all with the same settings, and Download saves them together as a .zip. Select a few first to trace only those, for example to give your photos the Photo preset and your logos the Logo preset.

Why is my SVG bigger than the original image?

Photos and busy textures need thousands of small shapes, and each one is written out as text. Lower Colours, raise Remove specks, or keep such pictures as JPG or WebP: SVG is the right format for shapes, not for photographic detail.
