Instagram post and story sizes

Instagram shares photos up to 1080 pixels wide, in any shape from 1.91:1 landscape to 3:4 portrait: 1080 × 566 to 1080 × 1440. A portrait post is 1080 × 1350 (4:5), a square one 1080 × 1080, and a story 1080 × 1920 (9:16). Pick one, choose Fill or Fit, and press Resize.

Which shape to post

Instagram keeps any post shape between 1.91:1 and 3:4. Landscape photos can be as wide as 1080 × 566 and portrait ones as tall as 1080 × 1440, a size many older guides don’t list, because Instagram’s limit used to be 4:5.

Portrait 4:5 (1080 × 1350) is the shape Meta’s own specs prefer for feed ads. At the same width, a taller photo simply covers more of a phone screen than a square or a landscape one.

Stories fill the whole screen at 9:16. Meta’s story ad specs ask to keep roughly 14% at the top, 35% at the bottom and 6% at each side free of text, where Instagram puts its own labels and buttons: a fair guide for any story.

Fill or Fit: crop the edges, or add borders

Fill crops the edges so the picture covers the whole frame. It suits most photos. If the crop cuts off something you want, open Crop Image and move the frame: the size stays exactly the one you picked.

Fit keeps the whole picture and fills the rest with borders, white, black or any colour you choose. Use it for a wide panorama in a portrait post, or a screenshot that mustn’t lose its edges.

Either way, a post comes out 1080 pixels wide in a shape Instagram accepts, so by Instagram’s own rules it keeps that resolution instead of being cropped or resized again.

Why 1080 pixels wide

Instagram sizes any photo wider than 1080 pixels down to 1080, and enlarges one narrower than 320 pixels to 320. Doing it yourself means the photo is resized once, with a high-quality filter, and you see the result before you post it.

A JPG is re-saved once, at quality 90 out of 100, from your original; a PNG stays lossless. A photo smaller than the frame is enlarged to fill it, which can look soft, and the size readout says so before you press Resize.

How it works

  2. Step 2:Pick the format

Portrait is ready. Choose Square, Tall, Landscape or Story instead, then Fill to crop or Fit to add borders.

  3. Step 3:Press Resize, then save

Nothing changes until you press Resize. Save the photos one at a time or together in a .zip.

Questions, answered

What size is an Instagram post?

1080 pixels wide and 566 to 1440 pixels tall, as of October 2026. The usual sizes are 1080 × 1350 (portrait, 4:5), 1080 × 1080 (square) and 1080 × 566 (landscape, 1.91:1); 1080 × 1440 (3:4) is the tallest.

What size is an Instagram story?

Stories fill a 9:16 screen, which at Instagram’s 1080-pixel width is 1080 × 1920. Meta’s specs for story ads recommend 1440 × 2560, the same shape: type it into the size fields if you need it.

Will Instagram crop my photo?

Only when its shape is wider than 1.91:1 or taller than 3:4: then Instagram crops it to a shape it supports. The post sizes on this page all have a supported shape, so Instagram has nothing to crop.

How do I post a whole photo without cropping it?

Choose Fit. The whole photo goes into the frame, and the space around it is filled with white, black or a colour you pick, so nothing is cut off.

What size should an Instagram profile picture be?

Instagram’s help pages don’t give a pixel size for profile pictures. They show as a circle cut from a square, so use Square (1080 × 1080) and keep your face in the middle.

Can I resize a whole carousel to the same shape?

Yes. Add every photo, pick the format once and press Resize: each one gets exactly the same size, so the photos in the carousel match.
