Flip or mirror an image
Flipping makes a mirror image: a horizontal flip swaps left and right, a vertical flip swaps top and bottom. It fixes reversed selfies, backwards writing and scans placed the wrong way round. This page opens Rotate & flip with a horizontal flip ready; press Flip to apply it. PNG stays lossless; other formats are re-saved once.
Flip or rotate: which one you need
Rotating turns the whole picture around its centre, the way you’d turn a print on a table. Nothing is reversed, so writing still reads normally. Use it when a photo is sideways or upside down.
Flipping mirrors the picture. Left becomes right, or top becomes bottom, and any writing comes out backwards. Use it when the picture is reversed rather than tilted.
A vertical flip isn’t the same as turning a photo upside down. A 180° turn keeps the writing readable once you tilt your head; a vertical flip reverses it, like a reflection in still water. Flip both ways at once and you get the 180° turn.
Mirrored selfies and backwards text
Front cameras show you a mirrored preview, because that’s the face you know from the bathroom mirror. Many phones then save the unmirrored shot, so the photo looks reversed next to what you saw. One horizontal flip turns it back.
On an iPhone you can choose which version gets saved: Settings > Camera > Mirror Front Camera.
Writing caught in a mirrored shot, such as a T-shirt slogan or a shop sign behind you, reads backwards. A horizontal flip makes it readable again. The same trick fixes a slide or a negative scanned face down the wrong way.
An honest note on quality
A flip only moves pixels, but the file still has to be saved again. A flipped PNG is pixel-perfect, because PNG is lossless. JPG, WebP and AVIF are re-encoded once, at quality 90 out of 100, from your original.
Flip twice, or flip and then crop, and ToolHero still saves just once, starting from the original. Edits never stack up into extra losses.
Some desktop tools, such as jpegtran, can mirror a JPG without re-encoding by rearranging its compressed blocks. ToolHero doesn’t do that yet, so reach for one of those if a bit-exact flip matters to you.
Other apps only set a “mirrored” flag in the photo’s EXIF data and leave the pixels alone, and not every viewer respects that flag. ToolHero writes the mirrored pixels themselves, so the flip shows up everywhere.
How it works
-
Step 1:Add the photos to mirror
Drop them in or choose them from your device. Flip a single picture or a whole set.
-
Step 2:Check the preview
Flip horizontal is already selected, and each thumbnail shows the mirrored result. Switch to Flip vertical if the picture needs turning top to bottom.
-
Step 3:Press Flip, then save
Nothing changes until you press Flip. Then download the images one at a time or bundled in a .zip.
Questions, answered
Is flipping a photo the same as mirroring it?
Yes. A horizontal flip is exactly what a mirror shows: left and right swap places. That’s why “flip” and “mirror” mean the same thing here.
How do I fix a selfie that looks reversed?
Apply a horizontal flip. It turns the saved photo back into the mirrored view your camera showed while you were taking it.
Is a vertical flip the same as rotating 180°?
No. A 180° turn puts the picture upside down but keeps writing readable if you turn your head. A vertical flip mirrors it top to bottom, so writing is reversed as well.
Will flipping change the file size?
A little. JPG, WebP and AVIF are saved once more at a high quality, which can nudge the size up or down. A flipped PNG keeps every pixel, but its size can still change, because ToolHero saves it with its own PNG optimiser.
Can I flip several photos the same way at once?
Yes. With no image selected, the flip applies to the whole workspace; pick some first to limit it to those.
Are my photos flipped on a server?
No. The flip happens inside your browser, on your device. Your photos aren’t sent anywhere, so it’s fine for private pictures too.
