About this tool

Make an MP3 from the sound of any video

This tool makes an MP3 from the sound of a video in MKV, MOV, WebM or MP4, right in your browser. It uses the first sound track it can decode, leaves the picture alone and lets you pick 128, 192 or 320 kbps. A video with only Dolby Digital or DTS sound says so. Nothing leaves your device.

MKV, MOV, WebM and MP4

OBS recordings are MKV by default, iPhone movies are MOV, a screen recording made in a browser is usually WebM, and almost everything else is MP4. The sound inside is AAC, Opus, MP3, Vorbis or FLAC in nearly every case, and all of those can be decoded here. Each video shows its container and what its sound is as soon as you add it.

It makes no difference to the MP3 which of them the sound came from, only to how it gets there: the sound is lifted out of the container, decoded and encoded as an MP3, and the picture is never touched.

Films with several sound tracks

A film often carries a sound track for each language, and an OBS recording can have the game, the microphone and the music on separate tracks. An MP3 holds one, so the first that can be decoded is used and the file says so before you press Convert. The others are left behind.

If the sound you want is not the first track, the tool can’t pick another one yet.

Dolby Digital and DTS

Many films on disc rips carry Dolby Digital (AC-3) or DTS sound. No browser decodes those here, and ToolHero doesn’t ship a decoder for them, so a film whose only sound is one of them says which in its row and is left alone, rather than turned into a silent or broken MP3. A film that has an AAC track beside the Dolby one uses the AAC.

Surround sound that can be decoded, such as 5.1 AAC, is mixed down to stereo, and the MP3 is stereo.

How it works

  1. Step 1:Add your videos

Drop MKV, MOV, WebM or MP4 files here, or choose them. Each one shows what its sound is.

  2. Step 2:Choose a quality and convert

High (192 kbps) is the default. Press Convert to make the MP3s.

  3. Step 3:Save

Save one MP3, or several as a .zip. Nothing was sent anywhere.

Questions, answered

Can I choose which sound track becomes the MP3?

Not yet. The first sound track that can be decoded is used, and a video that has more says so in its row.

My video says its sound is Dolby Digital. What can I do?

Its sound is in a format that can’t be decoded here yet, and the video is left alone. If it has another sound track in AAC, that one is used.

Will it keep the quality of my video’s sound?

An MP3 is a compressed copy of the sound, so it is a little worse than a video’s own sound. At 192 kbps most people can’t hear the difference, and Best (320 kbps) keeps the most.

Does it work for OBS recordings?

Yes. OBS saves MKV with AAC sound, which is read here. If it recorded your game and microphone as separate tracks, the first becomes the MP3.
