Take the sound out of an MP4 as an MP3
This tool takes the sound out of an MP4 video and saves it as an MP3, right in your browser. The picture is left behind, you choose 128, 192 or 320 kbps, and a big video is read in pieces instead of being held whole. The video never leaves your device.
Just the sound, from the video you have
A lecture you want to listen to on a walk, a concert filmed on your phone, a screen recording of a call, a clip a friend sent: the MP4 holds a picture and a sound, and you only want the second. This tool reads the sound track, makes an MP3 of it and leaves the picture where it was.
The picture is never decoded, so a big picture only means a bigger file to read through. The MP3 starts when the sound does and is as long as the sound is.
A big video is read in pieces
Videos are large, and converters that send the video to a server have to send it first. Here there is nothing to send: the video is read where it is, a piece at a time. Our 164 MB, 1-minute 1080p video became an MP3 of 0.7 MB in about 1 second on a recent laptop. The picture is never decoded, so we expect the time to follow how long the sound is rather than how big the video is, though we timed only this one video.
While it ran, the browser’s memory grew by up to about 250 MB. We haven’t measured phones, so we promise no size there, and a very large video may be too much for one.
What counts as an MP4 here
MP4 videos with sound in AAC, which is nearly all of them, or in MP3, Opus or FLAC. An MP4 that holds only sound, an M4A, works too. If a video has several sound tracks, such as two languages, the first is used and the file says so.
A video with no sound, as some screen recordings are, has nothing to make an MP3 of, and says so. A video whose sound is Dolby Digital or DTS can’t be decoded here yet, and says that. Nothing is converted until you press Convert.

Questions, answered
Does the picture get converted too?
No. Only the sound becomes an MP3. The picture is left in your video, which stays as it was.
Why does my MP4 say it has no sound?
It has no sound track. Screen recordings made without a microphone or system audio are like that. There is nothing to make an MP3 of.
How long can the video be?
There is no fixed limit. The video is read in pieces and the MP3 is written to your browser’s private storage as it goes. In Safari before version 26 the sound is decoded by the browser all at once, which works up to 10 minutes of sound, and the page says so when a video is longer.
Will the MP3 be smaller than my video?
Yes, by a lot. A video is mostly picture; the MP3 is only the sound, about 1.4 MB a minute at 192 kbps.
