Make WAV recordings small as MP3
This tool converts WAV files to MP3 right in your browser. A WAV is uncompressed, so the MP3 comes out about a seventh of the size at 192 kbps, and 24-bit and 32-bit float recordings are read as they are. It works in every browser, and the file never leaves your device.
About a seventh of the size, or less
A WAV holds every sample of the sound, so it is huge: a stereo song is about 10 MB a minute. Our 4-minute test track was 42.3 MB as a WAV and 5.8 MB as an MP3 at 192 kbps, 3.8 MB at 128 kbps and 9.6 MB at 320.
It took about 1 second on a recent laptop. A WAV is the fastest source there is, because nothing has to be decoded first.
Works in every browser, read a piece at a time
Other formats need the browser to decode them, and a few older browsers can’t. A WAV needs nothing: ToolHero reads its samples itself and gives them to the MP3 encoder, a piece at a time. So it works in Safari of any version too, and a long recording is read the same way, a piece at a time. We timed a 4-minute WAV, not a long one, and haven’t measured phones.
Recorder and studio files
16-bit, 24-bit and 32-bit float WAV files are read as they are, whether they come from a field recorder, Audacity or a mix export. A recording at 96 kHz or 88.2 kHz, which MP3 doesn’t have, is brought to 48 or 44.1 kHz. A 5.1 mix is mixed down to stereo. A mono recording stays mono and is made at half the bitrate you pick.
A WAV carries no title or cover art, so the MP3 has none either. Add them in your music player afterwards.
How it works
-

Drop recordings or mixes here, or choose them. Each one shows its length.
-
Step 2:Choose a quality
High (192 kbps) is the default; Best (320 kbps) is the most an MP3 holds.
-
Step 3:Convert and save
Press Convert, then save the MP3, or several as a .zip.
Questions, answered
How much smaller will my WAV get?
About a seventh at 192 kbps. A stereo WAV is roughly 10 MB a minute; an MP3 at 192 kbps is about 1.4 MB a minute, at 128 kbps about 1 MB and at 320 kbps 2.4 MB.
Does converting a WAV lose quality?
Yes, a little: an MP3 leaves out sound the ear is least likely to miss. At 192 kbps few people can hear it and at 320 kbps fewer still. Keep the WAV if you may edit it again.
Can it convert a very long WAV?
Yes, in every browser: the WAV is read a piece at a time, so the whole of it is never in memory. We have timed a 4-minute WAV and a 60-minute recording in another format, and haven’t measured phones.
Can I convert 24-bit or 96 kHz WAV files?
Yes. 24-bit and 32-bit float files are read as they are. 96 kHz is brought to 48 kHz, the highest rate MP3 has, and 88.2 kHz to 44.1 kHz.
